Typical Writing Day   Coffee is on, the fragrant aroma filling the entire house. The bitter, hot, beverage cools beside my open MacBook. Insulated headphones carry the upbeat tones of Glitch Mob, the beat pumping through my veins, giving that drive to put words on paper. My fingers fly over the keyboard, my muse working full-time. Hours pass by, every moment felt with the anxiety of the next scene to come, the next character to be taken by surprise, the MC receiving life-changing news. Dusk arrives but the words keep coming, pages filled by the time my head hits the pillow; and still my characters have conversations in my mind.   This glorious picture is NOT what any day in my writing life has ever looked like. If only. Dear Lord, if only. In a house of seven—husband and wife, two bigs, two toddlers, and the best dog ever to live—noise is just the way of life. Coffee is certainly a necessity to simply survive the day. It would be nice to say that I get in thousands of words a day, that I’m able to get an entire scene written in one setting. It just wouldn’t be reality.   Reality is me slurping down coffee just to keep my eyes open. I’m talking thirty-two ounces in my system before ten. Then we have play-dates, homeschool lessons, dance, soccer, 4-H, museum trips; you name it, we’ve somehow found ourselves signed up for it. The two sweet hours my bigs and I are blessed with during naptime are either spent getting caught up on school, or taking a nap ourselves.   Sometimes novels are put on hold for days because life is so full. But this doesn’t stop me. When it’s in my head, it is going to come out. There are many days when my Knight In Shining Armor arrives home from work, herding the little people to a different area of the house so those thoughts can escape. Though my best writing is usually accomplished in the wee hours of the night but I’m cool with that. I have that coffee to keep me alive for the beautiful circus that is my life.   Even though I’m not able to lockdown that writing routine that floats seamlessly through every day, I was still able to complete three novels in one year. This may not be top-bang, pumping ten to fifteen out in one year. But it is what I can accomplish while the inhabitants of my home sleep soundly through the night.   It isn’t pretty, some days it’s downright ugly, but it’s my messy life and I wouldn’t change it for anything. Someday I might be able to have that lovely, quiet writing space, but it wasn’t today, and I’m pretty certain it won’t be tomorrow. And I can proudly say these days aren’t lemons that I’m making lemonade out of, these days are the most decadent chocolate to ever touch your tongue. These are the days where I get to hang out with my kids all day and hear them talk about how they want to be a writer one day. The days where I get to watch my seven-year-old devour a chapter book in one sitting. The days my husband and I get look back on another day of chaos and laughter and love. Charyse Allan grew up in Arizona dancing and riding horses. She is an avid reader, but didn’t become one until high school. This is also when she realized her passion for writing, however it wasn’t until a couple years into her marriage that she tried her hand at writing a novel. When she isn’t writing or reading, she can be found in Northern Arizona, tending her garden with her husband and best friend, while their two kids and two crazy dogs run around the yard.
