Interview with the Author

What initially got you interested in writing?

I began writing in diaries as a young child. I found my true love of writing during a creative writing class when I was a junior in High School. I could let my imagination soar where in real life I was always told to get my head out of the clouds.

What genres do you write in?

I write in the Cozy genre, but my columns are bits of fluff and serious feelings and issues in different genres. I write Children’s mysteries and right now I am working on a book that would be possibly women’s fiction that is about a woman taking time to find herself.

What drew you to writing these specific genres?

It chose me. I wrote the book without knowing what a Cozy Mystery was, although I must say my two series, Fuchsia and Brilliant aren’t your stock cozies but a little quirky.

How did you break into the field?

I wrote the first book when I was very ill. I wrote it on my blog. Each day I woke up with the chapter in my head. It got out of a deep depression and illness. Then I read a book that I thought sounded like mine. I looked up the publishing company, Cozy Cat Press, and on a quick whim sent them a query letter. They answered and asked for my manuscript. I sent it in but it needed more words and more dialogue. I took a few months to fix it and resent it and then they offered me a contract.

What do you want readers to take away from reading your works?

I want my readers to have a respite from the outside world and to make them laugh and feel more lighthearted. But I also want them to feel some empathy with some of my characters in what they go through. That happens more in my recent books as I have developed the characters over time.

What do you find most rewarding about writing?

My readers when they tell me I have made them laugh and feel better and also the people I have met in the literary world.

What do you find most challenging about writing?

I always say I am comma challenged. Editing is hard for me because I let the words flow and forget about right and wrong when it comes to grammar. I find my writing follows the way I talk which is Minnesotan and not always correct with a lot of sayings that other people in other parts of the country don’t understand. For instance, my editor once wanted to change my wording which was, big box store. She was in North Carolina and had no idea what I meant and thought it was a wording misstep. I assured her in Minnesota we had what we call “Big Box Stores.” Meaning places like Sam’s Club or Walmart.

What advice would you give to people wanting to enter the field?

Put the words on paper and write at least a paragraph a day to keep you going. If there is something you don’t know, ask for help. Find authors in your genre and reach out to them. Authors are very generous people.

What type of books do you enjoy reading?

I love cozies of course but I also love thrillers, Christian books and woman’s fiction.

Is there anything else besides writing you think people would find interesting about you?

I am an artist wannabe and I can fix my own computer. I worked for a computer firm and owned my own computer repair business and I didn’t start that career until I was in my fifties. You’re never too old to learn something new.

A Bit About Me As An Impassioned Writer

As human beings, we are always a work in progress. From birth to death we live, hurt, laugh, cry, feel, and with all of those emotions we grow as people, as family members, and as friends. I am a dreamer and feel blessed to have the opportunity in my writing to pass those dreams on to others. I believe you are never too old to dream and to turn those dreams into a creative endeavor. I live in rural Minnesota and I am a wife, mother, and grandmother.

I have worn many hats throughout my life such as working as a waitress, nursing home activities person, office manager and finally a computer repair person eventually owning my own computer sales and repair business. I never forgot my love of writing and quit my computer business in 2012 after signing a contract with Cozy Cat Press for Granny Hooks A Crook, the first book in my Fuchsia, Minnesota Series.

Adding four more books to the Fuchsia Series, adding a new Brilliant, Minnesota Series and writing a column for local newspapers feeds my writing creativity.

I also dabble a bit in watercolor painting and hope to eventually add pictures to my children’s book series, Granny’s In Trouble.

Oh, and did I tell you I like to be a little bit silly.
