Cape May, New Jersey, is the site of a big culinary competition—and the knives are out . . .
Poppy McAllister is happy about opening a Jersey Shore B&B—but working in a professional kitchen has always been her real dream. Now it’s coming true, at least briefly, as she teams up with her former fiancée, Tim—and his condescending partner, Gigi—during the high-profile Restaurant Week challenge. Poppy’s specialty is pastries, despite her devotion to a Paleo diet. But if anyone can make glorious gluten-free goodies, it’s Poppy.
Things get heated quickly—especially when some ingredients get switched and Tim’s accused of sabotage. Relatively harmless pranks soon escalate into real hazards, including an exploding deep fryer. And now one of the judges has died after taking a bite of Poppy’s cannoli—making her the chef suspect . . .
Includes Seven Recipes from Poppy’s Kitchen!
About the Author
Interview with the Author
What initially got you interested in writing?
I started writing plays for my drama team. There was nothing better than the feeling of hearing an audience laugh at jokes I’d written. I enjoyed the process so much it made me want to write down some of the stories that had been swirling around in my head.
What genres do you write in?
I write a cozy mystery that is part mystery, part romance, and part chick lit with a lot of humor.
What drew you to writing these specific genres?
They are all things I love, and cozy mystery gave me the chance to write all of them and still have a clean story with no sex, violence, or language.
How did you break into the field?
I worked with a writing coach to learn the basics of plot structure and how to set a scene. It was like taking a writing class where all your homework was your own novel. A few months and seventy queries into the process of looking for an agent, I got the call that someone believed in me.
What do you want readers to take away from reading your works?
I want you to feel good about yourself. Love yourself where you are today. My books are fun and funny and light. They’re an escape from the chaos that the world is today.
What do you find most rewarding about writing?
I love it when a reader sends me a note and tells me they enjoyed my book and that it meant a lot to them. People identify with my characters and tell me they feel like they are friends with them.
What do you find most challenging about writing?
Putting the busyness of life aside to find the time to write. Writing a novel is a labor of love, not just something you sit down and bang out over lunch. It’s where my heart wants to be every day.
What advice would you give to people wanting to enter the field?
You have to love it. You better be consumed with telling your stories because you’ll make no money, you’ll have no free time, and everyone is a critic.
What type of books do you enjoy reading?
I like a lot of things. Mystery, Romance, Fantasy, Science Fiction, Chick Lit. I’m a big sucker for anything funny.
Is there anything else besides writing you think people would find interesting about you?
I can kill a houseplant in one weekend. I’m getting more dyslexic as I get older. And “Cake makes me explode.” Jumanji 2
