WHODUNNIT? BEATS ME… IDENTIFYING THE MURDERER IN MYSTERIES

Some writers start crafting their books with an excellent outline, building the book from a thorough exploration of the murderer they have impeccably selected.

Unfortunately, I’m not such a writer.

Consider this, an anecdote about the man I consider the mastery of mystery, Raymond Chandler, from the blog The Greatest Book List in the World:

Many people have mentioned (or complained) that in The Big Sleep, Chandler leaves one major aspect of the plot unresolved. At one point in the book, the Sternwood’s chauffeur is found dead in his car at the bottom of the Lido pier. The police conclude that this is probably a murder – it looks like he has a head wound from a blunt object, but we never discover who the killer is. As the story goes, when this book was being turned into a movie, the filmmakers sent a telegram to Raymond Chandler asking who killed the chauffeur. Chandler answered, “Damned if I know.”

Clearly, I don’t have the success of Raymond Chandler (yet), so I could never get away with that (where was his editor anyway!?).

In the relative vein of this little ditty, I will say that I have never written a book where I’m correct in identifying the murderer in a first draft. Not even close.

With my first effort with a mystery, Drowning Lessons, Book 1 in the Red Frog Beach series, I started writing with only two images in my mind. Firstly, based on a vacation to Red Frog Beach, I knew that the murder would be what looked like ‘an unfortunate snorkeling incident.’ Secondly, it would be in conjunction with a decadent destination wedding.

Ready. Set. Go.

In writing the first fifty pages, I had written what seemed to be the perfect murder. I was as clueless as first-time sleuth, Lexie. I didn’t have enough suspects, so I pulled them out of thin air. Not until I was writing the last twenty pages did the author (me…) figure out who this diabolical murderer was. I think it’s pretty clever, but you be the judge.

Based on this, my second draft was easily 50% different from the first. The published version of this book is probably 75% new. That process took me two years.

And yes, I did forget one of the murders. Trust me, that has been fixed.

With my second mystery, Evelyn Bay (Book 1 in the Hedy Taylor Mystery Series, yet to be published), I knew I had to put together a solid outline. I didn’t. I got as far as identifying the murderer before I started writing. A third of the way through, I decided the killer should be someone else. Then again, in the last stretch of the book, I changed the killer again. I thought it created thrills and chills and could see the movie adaptation clearly in my mind.

My former agent told me it didn’t work. And it didn’t. Back to the drawing board. Another terror of a rewrite. My books have needed serious rewrites, not bandaids, in my lack of outline proficiency.

I’m getting better. In the latest in the Red Frog Beach Mystery Series, The Wipeout Affair, I only changed the murderer once. Halfway through the book, I took a step back and saw that solving the crime was way too easy. Those who read it as I wrote identified the murderer correctly very early on. Structurally the book was sound from the get-go, so the rewrite was not a painful one. I actually found it fun. I hope you do too.

As I start writing book three in the series, tentatively titled The Beach Cover-up, I have a crystal clear vision of the murderer. Will it change? I’m sure it will. It’s a mystery. It’s fun figuring it out as it goes. It’s a blast getting to know the new characters and seeing those who you want to stick around in the future and who might inspire the twists and turns we all desperately crave.

So, whodunnit? No idea.
